August 1588, the Spanish Armada got a crushing defeat in a sea battle. On the escape of the British, the fleet got into a storm in which one of the ships run aground close to Spiekeroog. This is what the old islanders tell. Also the Virgin Mary statue, of the old church, comes from this wreck. How reliable are oral traditions passed down to us by word of mouth?
